For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa early 1920s Sheaffer #2 Gold Filled Flat Top Fountain Pen with extremely scarce Sheaffer #2 Flexible Nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new silicone sac. Hand polished the Gold Filled Cap, Barrel, SHEAFFER Straight Clip, Lever Arm, and 14K Sheaffer NIB. This Sheaffer Flat Top all Gold Filled metal Flat Top Fountain Pen are difficult pens to source. The cap is always securing tightly to the barrel. The Gold Filled Cap is displays wear to the entire clip and around the top edging of the cap top. The cap has some large breather hole in the cap which look to be not factory original - could have been repair work to help to keep more air circulating while the cap securely tightened to the barrel to alleviate the drying out of ink - nonetheless, there are these larger circular holes into the cap.
The barrel shows wear just below the threads where the "SHEAFFER'S" Imprint is on the barrel. Also, there is wear at the end of the barrel where the cap was posted. Overall the barrel is in excellent condition with no dings or dents. There is a cartouche area and it is free of any monograms. This Sheaffer #2 Flat Top Fountain Pen measures 5 1/4" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.
I have tested the lever filling mechanism with water and fills as it should. The filling system is working as it was designed to.
Here is where this Sheaffer Fountain Pen gets interesting. Typically, we rarely find Sheaffer nibs that are nothing less stiff as a nail when writing with it. This Sheaffer has a #2 Super Flexible Nib that ranges from a Fine to Triple Broad line variation and considered a very scarce nib in Sheaffer collector markets. The actual iridium tip on this Sheaffer Nib has an extra-fine point measuring roughly .43mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing a sample with this NIB, it writes with a fine to triple broad line. In the writing sample provided, the fine line measures at .46mm and will flex to a triple broad stroke measuring 2.62mm with medium to firm pressure when I measured with digital calipers. Additionally, the nib writes super smoothly - this is actually a very "crazy" nib that I have found in this pen and very desirable. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was performed by dipping the Nib in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink. The nib is very rigid and not a wet writer.
The condition of the body on this Sheaffer #2 has it challenges with wear and the enlarged cap breather holes. The nib really makes up for this collectible Sheaffer specimen. Rarely do we find Sheaffer nibs that flex like this one does and it the reason where the price is. Clearly this pen falls into the User Grade to Fine Condition area but the nib is a "grail" type in terms of flexibility and smooth writing. These are clearly very scarce pens and high-cachet on collector lists. Certainly, this one would be a great addition to one's writing arsenal collection!
